Classpass: East London's best (and most overrated) fitness classes...

You’ll probably know by now that I’m quite an enthusiastic kinda gal. As soon as I discover something, I’ll tell the world about it and fully embrace it into my life, whether it’s a bargain coat I found (did I mention I got a coat for £5 one time?!) or a new fitness class. So it goes without saying that I had to tell you about my first month trying out Classpass
Classpass offers you the chance to try out a variety of different classes in a bunch of different studios across London. From yoga, to HIIT training, boxing, to outdoor workouts, there’s something for everyone. And it’s perfect if you’re stuck in a rut with your training, if you find gyms bloody boring, or if you're trying to find a way to make your New Year's resolution of getting fit that little bit easier.
While you have a limit of attending three classes per studio, this works perfectly for me. It ensures that I keep trying new things out and that really keeps my motivation up. Plus, everyone knows that the best way to see results is to keep your body guessing and that means not doing the same workout, day in, day out. From now on, I’ll be writing a regular post about my ‘class of the week’, but for now here are some of the best - and worst - classes I’ve tried so far…

TEMPO PILATES Shoreditch, 6 Cygnet Street, E1 6GW
Reformer Pilates, Beginners/Intermediate

I’m embarrassed to admit that I headed down to the beginners class completely unaware of what reformer pilates was! For those that don’t know, it’s a form of pilates done using a reformer machine and is more dynamic and intense than your standard pilates. Tempo claim it can help to achieve weight loss, ‘long lean muscle tone’, increased flexibility, strengthening lower back muscles and improved posture. It was complicated and I think it will take a while for me to get the hang of it, but who doesn’t want long and lean muscles?! I usually go for intense workouts, but I’ll be giving reformer pilates another go. I would recommend trying out a beginners workshop if you’ve never tried it before, though.

THE REFINERY, 14 Collent Street, E9 6SG
Rise & Shine Cardio Blast

This 45-minute class is great for waking you up and giving every single part of your body a workout. To give you an idea, the warm-up consists of jump-squats, burpees and star jumps, so you know it’s not going to be an easy run. But the instructor Marlon, who owns Push Mind Over Body Fitness, is brilliant at keeping you motivated. The weekday class is usually quite small too, which means you’re never left looking around the rest of the class trying to work out what you’re meant to be doing.

Thursdays and Fridays, 7.15 - 8.30am

1REBEL, Broadgate Circle, EC2M 2QS
Rumble

If you saw my previous post about 1Rebel, you’ll know I’m a big fan. The trainers are motivating, the facilities are exceptional and the classes work you hard. Rumble is a boxing and martial arts class that quite literally keeps you on your toes. When you’re not punching the hell out of the bag, you’re on the floor doing push-ups, burpees and crunches. It’s the perfect stress buster after a hard day in the office. Gloves are £1 to hire and wraps are £4 to buy.

FRAME Shoreditch, 29 New Inn Yard, EC2A 3EY
Ass & Abs

It feels like a great shame to have to tell you I found Frame really disappointing. I was desperate to try out some of their classes as soon as I moved to London - they sound like so much fun! Their marketing is spot on and gives you the impression that the facilities are fantastic, but I found quite the opposite. Sure, the class gave me a great workout and I have nothing but positive things to say about the instructors. But the mats smelt awful, the ankle weights wouldn’t stay on, there was no hot water for a shower, the shampoo bottles were encrusted with mould, there were no lockers and the floors in the changing rooms were covered in mud. I don’t know whether I’ve become a princess after the luxury of 1Rebel’s changing facilities, but for quite a hefty price tag this seems unacceptable.

Classpass London is available for £79 per month
